First Defektors Review!

From November's Discorder Magazine:

"We start this column the same way we ended the previous month’s—with local lads Defektors. No sooner had I sung their praises last issue than they delivered another knockout punch, this time with even more emphasis on getting folks on the floor to shake what their mamas gave them. “No To The Nite” and “Torn To Pieces” both ride rollercoaster bass riffs, staccato-punching guitar licks and ragged but right drumming. It seems no other band can seamlessly draw from a number of genres and make it look so easy. This is beat-punk-garage-art-rock at its best."
Review by Bryce Dunn

We still have copies of both Defektors records in stock, but they are going fast as reviews roll in and buzz spreads.

October Update!

White Lung's "Local Garbage" 7 inch is sold out, look for the few remaining copies lurking around in record shops and distros. I do have their new Deranged Records 7 inch in the shop for your purchasing pleasure. Also in the shop is the now sold out first pressing of Defektors "Secret Trials/Doomsday Girl" 7 inch on red vinyl. The economy is only going to get worse if you don't invest in these records!

DEFEKTORS - Torn to Pieces/No to the Nite double A side single OUT NOW!

The release party was crazy and went into the wee-est hours of the night with Defektors holding court with the drunkest and weirdest partiers who seem to materialize out of thin air at the ER after 3 am. I saw a black dude dressed up as a mime or clown or something break up a fight in the alley near the end of the night. All in a days work I suppose.

All pre-orders have been shipped, and the records should be available through Rocket Reducer and Florida's Dying very soon. If you are in Vancouver, check out Scratch, Zulu, Audiopile, Dandelion and Neptoon for a copy.

DEFEKTORS RECORD RELEASE SHOW: SEPTEMBER 27TH

Finally! after too many delays, a west coast tour and an appearance at the Victory Square block party, Defektors double A side single is almost ready to hit the streets. The record, as well as their sister single on Nominal records will be availble for the first time at this extravaganza record release show, being held at the Emergency Room on the 27th.
White Lung's new 7 inch on Deranged will also be coming out at that show, so make sure to bring enough money for three 7 inches!

I have put both of Defektors new 7 inches up for pre-sale on the store section of the page, they will be shipping out the day of the show, so you should have them before anybody else on your block! Records will be availbel from all the usual suspects shortly after that! Also, I have a few copies of the White Lung first pressing left on the store, so order up becuase they are pretty much all gone. We're working on a 2nd pressing!

defektors torn to peices

Defektors forthcoming Hockey Dad 7 inch has been delayed for some reason, but the simultanious Nominal records 7 inch will be ready for their West Coast tour with B-Lines in mid August. We should have the records in time for Defektors appearance at the Victory Square block party this labour day weekend in Vancouver.

WHITE LUNG IN WIRE MAGAZINE

Here's a cool review by Byron Coley from the March issue of Wire. Pretty friggin rad.
"Great Vancouver punk quartet that combines a sort of classic West Coast punk vocal sneer with early Riot Grrrl articulation and sheets of throbbing post-core guitar. At their best they sound like Bikini Kill doing a cover of Minor Threat's cover of Wire's "12XU".

UPDATES!

The white vinyl run of White Lung's debut 7 inch is all gone! You are all at Ebay's mercy from now on. We still have some black vinyl copies left in the store though, make sure to pick some up before that is gone as well. I've heard they are recording their new 7 inch for Deranged very soon, so also make sure to check that out when it is available!

Defektors have almost finished up their songs for the next Hockey Dad release. They sound great, I can't wait to get that record out, people are going to FREAK OUT. They've also been laying low on the show front, whenever they do decide to play next, make sure you go!

I was talking with some friends about how Mint Records used to tape records for people if they sent a blank cassettte and realized that was a very very cool thing to do. So I'm going to do it! Just send me a blank cassette and $3 (you can do that through paypal if you want) and I'll tape you any Hockey Dad release (even out of print records) and mail it back. Right on! Send a tape today!

WHITE LUNG RETURNS!

for real this time:
Saturday, March 22 - 9:00pm
The Peanut Gallery (Pender & Richards)
I'll bring a backpack full of records for you to buy

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hockey Dad all 2.0 up in it.

Wow, a Hockey Dad website and it's not even geocities!

Some updates: DEFEKTORS! Vancouver's next big thing have been playing so many shows lately that it's suprising that they don't have a record out yet. The three peice bashes out a stompy and powerful caveman-esque Joy Division on KBD that is so un-forgettable that the world will soon be lapping up every square inch of vinyl they release.

WHITE LUNG!
Hot off about 300 great reviews of their 7 inch and a MRR interview, White Lung are set to play thier first show in over 6 months! I guess this will be the record release show, becuase last time they played the records were hanging out in a UPS truck somewhere in Tennesse. Not only that, they have signed on with Deranged Records for a couple more releases which means that what we have left of their debut 7 inch (10 white vinyl copes left) should evaporate as soon as the rest of the world wises up. Also, look for a couple more songs recorded in the same shed on the same day of their 7inch tracks going on an Emergency Room comp being put out by Nominal Records this Spring.

THE BLOGGERS!
Jeff is back from the front lines of the writers strike and the gang is recording new songs at an incredible pace. And along with every other indie band in Vancouver this season, the Bloggers will take thier turn singing the National Anthem at an upcoming Canucks game. Check out their space aged website for more music than I would ever be able to release: www.thebloggersgalaxy.com

White Lung Local Garbage Reviews!

From Exclaim! Magazine:

White Lung
Local Garbage

Featuring members of the Riff Randells and the now-defunct Automatic Fancy, Vancouver's White Lung combine the restlessness of Wipers-infused garage punk with a messy Kill Rock Stars aesthetic. Local Garbage, the band's debut seven-inch, goes straight for the jugular, demonstrating the band's ability to write classic-sounding punk songs with new ideas. "Local Garbage" fills the A-side with a plodding bass line that leaves room for the angular guitar and pissed-off vocals. "Breaking Boxes" starts the B-side with a more melodic approach, replete with infectious guitar work and a pulsing rhythm section. Finishing the record, "Amy White Out" builds off scraped guitar to create a song that's both angular and memorable. By employing three unique ideas in such a short time, White Lung demonstrate their versatility and suggest big things to come with future releases. (Hockey Dad) - Josiah Hughes

From Streethawk magazine:

White Lung
Local Garbage
(Hockey Dad)
Rating: 90%

It’s probably a major music writer faux pas to directly rip off the label write up when describing a record, but when it’s bang on, what are you going to do? The guy that put out this slab of vinyl describes White Lung as “Bikini Kill covering Wire at your favourite punk house,” and it’s hard to come up with something more accurate.

White Lung’s first release (outside of some home job cassettes) is characterized by instrumentation that takes Pink Flag’s economical riffage and injects a little more looseness into the proceedings, with singer, Mish, doing her best Kathleen Hanna over top of the din. It’s also worth noting – with no disrespect to Wire, because they’re awesome – that Colin Newman and his band of limey art school drop outs sort of sound like pansies. White Lung comes off as anything but.

Teaming the title track with “Amy White Out” and “Breaking Boxes” on the flipside, the only drawback to this “debut” is that it’s a bit of a tease at a mere three songs long. With the band currently on hiatus (Mish is overseas until the New Year), sadly, this is all we’re going to get for awhile too.
